Resident Life: Students splash and social distance in water wars

Published on

The residence hall staff hosted a water fight for students outside the residence hall last Wednesday evening.

The water war was held in the courtyard between the residence hall and the Fort Sherman Officers’ Quarters. Gray Pocius, the resident assistant for the 2nd floor of the building, put on the event with help from Jestine Lackner, the resident assistant for the 1st floor, and Molly John, the Senior resident assistant.

The fight was a free-for-all between the nine students who attended the event. All students wore masks during the event, even if the masks got wet. Due to the nature of the event, students naturally socially distanced as to not get too close to their adversaries and to lessen the risk of COVID-19.

“I chose the event because it was something we could do that was socially distanced,” Pocius said. “We didn’t have to get super close to each other because we didn’t want to get splashed.”

By the end of the event, all the students who participated were thoroughly soaked. The event lasted around an hour from start to finish, right before the sunset and the evening coolness set in.

The event was planned near the beginning of the semester so the weather wouldn’t be too hot nor cold for students to attend. Temperatures for the evening hovered around 80F with sunny skies.

“I’m super glad people came,” said Pocius. “It was a ton of fun.”

“I thought there’d be more of a sense of strategy,” Samuel Sorensen said, a first-year student living in the dorms. “But I guess sometimes it’s just fun to take some water and soak some friends.”

Gray Pocius faces off against his adversaries. Pocius is a NIC student who is majoring in English and Secondary Education. He is also apart of the Ambassador program at NIC.

Students wait for the free-for-all to begin.

Sorensen goes on the defense.

Pocius chases after an adversary hiding in the bushes.

John ducks as she runs back towards her bucket to refill. There were multiple recycling bins filled with water dotted throughout the courtyard.

A three-way intersection between foes.
