NIC Board members took time after a public board meeting on Wednesday night to answer questions regarding the former NIC instructor who made a political FB post.
“The board took no action against the instructor,” said NIC president, Nick Swayne. “They also had no contact with the professor.”
Students and community members alike came to the board meeting to share their opinions and gain insight on the absence of NIC instructor, Matthew Singer.
Although the events surrounding Singer’s departure were not directly discussed by the board members during the meeting, one student came to the board to speak.
“If the decision is made to fire my teacher, it goes against the students,” the student said to board trustee, Brad Corkill.
“This is a private issue, whether or not he was terminated or resigned is sealed.” Corkill said.
“You guys probably did the right thing, all I know is what I read in the paper.” Community member Mike Gridley said during public comments.
Gridley shared his opinions about the current situation under the pretense that he was going to be talking about NIC’s goals for this upcoming year. Corkill cut him off and requested him to stay on track.
Gridley finished his statement, “A college should be a place where the expression of peoples’ opinions, one way or another, is fundamental to what makes us Americans. I strongly encourage this college to support that and defend it.”
