AAWCC pins new members

A group of 28 local women gathered Wednesday to celebrate new members of the North Idaho College chapter of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC).

Tracy Struble, founding member and president of NIC’s AAWCC chapter board, said during the event, “This chapter is really focusing on internal NIC. This is our space to really talk.”

The national organization, whose mission is to enhance the lives of women through education, service and leadership development, was founded in 1973. The NIC chapter was organized by several employees in the fall of 2017. Since then, membership has grown to over 40 women.

AAWCC officers and members joined to celebrate new members at “Tea and Talk” Wednesday.

“What we’re creating is a community,” Struble said.

Sherry Simkins, division chair for communication and fine arts and NIC AAWCC chapter member, believes this is an opportunity to support local women by giving them the skills needed to accomplish their goals.

“Research shows that in order for women to seek leadership positions they need mentors and an institutional climate that is supportive of women, “Simkins said. “AAWCC can help shape a campus culture that is supportive of women and their career goals as well as helps them find mentors.”

An annual membership is $10 for students and $25 for employees. Fees help pay for future professional development events, scholarships and workshops on campus to educate and empower its’ members.

“I am passionate about supporting women in the workplace and think it is important for women to have a space where we can come together and learn from each other,” Simkins said. “These opportunities can help women advance in their own career and support others along their journey.”

The AAWCC’s next event is scheduled for December. Information regarding the event will be announced in the future.
