Turning Point USA representatives on campus vie for club status

Students on campus may have noticed representatives from Turning Point USA tabling the first few weeks of the semester along the edge of the soccer field. Their colorful signs have attracted the attention of many passersby who are curious about their presence on campus.

Samuel Johnson, an employee of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), has been working to revive their NIC chapter after being inactive the past few years. In that time, the chapter lost their previous club advisor, leaving them to search for a new one. Johnson says this is their main obstacle to achieving club status.

Last Wednesday, Johnson says they received 40 subscriptions to the TPUSA newsletter, indicating interest among the students in joining the club should it be recognized as such by the Intra-Club Council (ICC). Until then, students will find the TPUSA table on the field every Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., then inside the student union as winter sets in.

Reagan Pellow, a dual credit student pursuing General Studies and president of the NIC chapter, expressed the need for students to be involved with campus activities. “If you’re constantly focused on school” Pellow says, “it’s difficult not to be depressed.” When asked what resource TPUSA would provide for NIC, Pellow said students would have a platform to get involved with political social issues.

According to the TPUSA website, part of their mission is to “educate students about the importance of fiscal responsibility, free markets, and limited government”. Pellow says that these values are present on campus among students, faculty, and staff. “Everyone’s friendly” she says when asked how their presence has been received .

“Turning Point USA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in 2012 by Charlie Kirk.” their website says. “The organization’s mission is to identify, educate, train, and organize students to promote the principles of freedom, free markets, and limited government. Turning Point USA believes that every young person can be enlightened to true free market values.”

If students wish to get involved with the TPUSA chapter on campus, they can email samuel.johnson@TPUSA.com. Alternatively, they can find their table on campus every Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
