Two best friends have made their dream into reality and brought their bookstore and bistro Kindred and Company to Post Falls.
The soon-to-open Kindred and Company resides in a grand, two-story brick building where a bookstore section holds cozy seating areas, a fireplace, and plenty of bookshelves, the future home of over 20,000 book titles.
The bistro, easily accessible from the store, will provide a more social setting with café tables, chandeliers, and tile floor accents for the perfect meet-up spot.
The two co-owners, Elizabeth Harrison and Selinna Maefau, have always dreamed of creating a community space for students, friends, office goers, and everyone in between.
The desire to create a symbiotic space for people “that’s not work and not home,” was important to the two, said Maefau, and came from the pair’s love of books and bites.
“One of the two things that we often sought out were bookstores and places to eat,” Harrison said, when talking about their college years. “We always wanted to bring those two together.”
When asked why their business would appeal to students, both Maefau and Harrison replied that they wanted to create a good place for good people, good food and good conversation all under one roof.
“It’s absolutely something we’ve talked about, being a place for students,” Maefau said.
Both Maefau and Harrison completed degrees in English literature at Western Washington University. The study of literature kept their love of books alive, and many afternoons were spent with friends discussing literature in local coffee shops.
Inspired by their own experiences, a separate room intended for students or friends looking to gather in a quiet space will be located on the ground floor. The space will be available through reservation. However, details have not been released regarding how it would operate.
In addition to providing a good time, a retail gift section will offer various gifts and goods such as candles or books and a whimsical children’s nook on the second floor will offer books curated towards younger readers.
Other features to be offered include a personal coffee blend by Montana Coffee Traders served at the coffee bar, and build-your-own charcuterie boards featured on the menu.
Discussions regarding student discounts and a loyalty program are ongoing, as the company would like to incorporate both into the business.
