Streamlined Scheduling Ahead

Faculty assembly works to sync class times for fall 2024 semester

The chair of the faculty assembly announced the faculty’s goal of implementing common course times starting in fall of 2024.

Common course times mean that a standard timetable will be established in which all classes will be scheduled in the same time slots, removing schedule conflicts arising from overlapping class times.

“It looks like it will be a really efficient use of class time that will start for us in fall of 2024,” said Kathleen Miller-Green, chair of the faculty assembly.

In the past there has been no universal timetable by which classes were scheduled. The absence of such a timetable has caused conflict within students’ schedules.

For example, a student who needed to take CHEM 101-101 Intro to Chemistry from 10:00-10:50 would have been unable to take their required PHTO-183 Intro to Photography course that ran from 10:30 to 11:15.

“It’s not something that’s been done before, so it’s taken a little bit of work,” NIC President Nick Swayne said. “I think we’re well on our way.”

With the new common course times in place students will be able to construct schedules with universal course times, preventing conflicts and awkward spaces of free time.

The upcoming change is exciting for NIC students.

“I can plan the rest of my schedule around my classes, because they’ll be more set in stone,” said Sophia Partridge, a student at NIC. “I won’t have to switch to online classes.”

Sophia Crimmins, a student in her second year at NIC, shared that she believes the new change will help students get the most out of both their classes and their experience at the college. “Establishing a clear, universal timetable ensures that there’s no overlap in core classes and electives.”

The announcement was made during the board of trustees meeting on Wednesday, and the faculty assembly will further discuss the new schedule when they meet again in February. More information to be released.
