NIC student awarded Purple Heart Scholarship

A North Idaho College student was awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Department of Idaho Military Order of the Purple Heart.

“I am deeply honored and filled with gratitude to receive this scholarship,” said NIC student Jayden Murphy. “My father’s story and sacrifice inspire me every day to continue to work hard, and thanks to this scholarship, I can do just that while pursuing my education at NIC.”

Murphy, who is studying to become a teacher, received the scholarship through her father, Sgt. Daniel Porter, a combat veteran who served in Iraq and was awarded a Purple Heart.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart Scholarship was created this year to support U.S. military veterans, especially Purple Heart recipients and their families, in their pursuit of education and training. Purple Hearts are awarded to service members who are wounded, killed or injured by enemy or friendly fire while serving their country.

NIC was designated a Purple Heart College in 2023, recognizing the institution’s commitment to supporting veterans, active-duty service members and their families.

“Supporting students like Jayden is at the heart of our mission,” Military Order of the Purple Heart representative Len Crosby said. “By investing in education, we honor the service and sacrifices of veterans and their families.”
