Men’s soccer settles

We knew it was going to be stiff competition,” Alex Helm said after Saturday’s game against Clark College.

The final score was 2-2. Cesar Aguirre and Cole Abramson each claimed a goal for the Cardinals, although it was not enough to take the victory.

The men’s soccer team saw plenty of success in past years when it came to conference play. The Cardinals won the championship the past three years, and coach Scott Moorcroft said that this years’ team has more firepower than ever.

Renatto Brito, sophmore captain from Boring, Ore., seems very confident with the team they have this year.

“The coaches have done a  better job recruiting, and the players have more flat out skill,” he said.

Brito came to NIC through word of mouth. When problems occurred with his full-ride scholarship to Gonzaga University, coach Moorcroft heard about him through Gonzaga coaches. Brito played last year and was named team captain for this year.

“Our chemistry will catch on as the season goes on,” Brito said, “It’s slow at first, but we’ll be perfect toward the end of the season. We aren’t as tall as last year’s team, but we’re more creative and have a lot more talented players.”

The boys are looking forward to the championship at the end of the season, and Moorcroft predicts another conference championship this year. Brito wants more than that. He hopes for a chance at last year’s national champs, Yavapai.

“We have the talent this year,” Brito said.

The team currently 1-1-2 for the season with plenty of games to play. Their next home game is Sept. 30 at 4 p.m.
