North Idaho College introduces the biggest career planning event in years, which provides an opportunity of exploration for seeking students and community members.
Gail Laferriere, a career counselor at NIC, is putting on a career market in which local professionals from a vast number of career fields will gather for students to come and explore different career opportunities.
“This is not a job fair, it’s a career exploration market,” Laferriere said.
The career market will take place on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Edminster Student Union Building, Lake Coeur d’Alene Room.
Between 80-100 professionals who live and work in the Coeur d’Alene community will be available to answer questions about what their careers. Exploring students and community members will be able to talk to the “passionate and excited” professionals to hear about what each job entails. Almost every major will be represented.
“There are so many opportunities out there, and students who come will be able to see the vast opportunities there are,” Laferriere said. “I think there is going to be something for everyone.”
The career market will be a sampling for students to realize their options are not limited.
“The latest research shows that students with career goals within their first year are 50 percent more likely to complete college and be successful in life. That’s part of my motivation for doing this,” the career counselor said. “I really want our students to know more. Sometimes you don’t know until you actually talk to a professional who’s actually doing the work.”
Laferriere also mentioned these professionals are donating four hours of their pay and their time to come to this event and help students. She encourages students to thank these professionals for their generosity and time.
STCU is completely sponsoring and paying for this event, and Laferriere would like to send a special thank you for providing this valuable opportunity for the community.
