The NIC Men’s Golf team is off and rolling in its 2018 spring season. The defending NWAC Champions are once again pacing the league, currently up 1.5 points over Southwest Oregon Community College after two tournaments.
The Cardinals won the North Idaho League match last weekend by a combined 17 shots. As a team they shot 20 over par, easily cruising to a victory on their home course. Sean Langham led the way, shooting a two under and wining the individual tournament medal. Behind him, freshman Ben Harvey and sophomore Todd Henderson put up two over and six over respectively, playing big roles in the win. For his performance, Langham won NWAC Player of the Week. Coach Russell Grove had high approval for his sophomore golfer.
“He’s put in good work this spring on the course and in the gym and it’s great to see it pay off. His round today was impressive with the conditions,” Grove said.
Earlier in April, the Cardinals won the Bigfoot Invitational at the Links Golf Club in Post Falls. In wet and nasty weather on day one, the Cards pulled through, winning with a round of nine over par. Again, the U of I transfer Langham scored the best, shooting par. Todd and Jesse Henderson followed him, finishing with scores of 74 each. The next day, the Cards as a team shot for par, led by sophomore Brady Nelson and Henderson’s scores of 71. Overall, the team held off Lewis-Clark State by two strokes to win the title.
That performance has the Head Coach excited for what the future holds.
“Doing what we did today gives me a lot of confidence on what we can do the rest of the spring,” said Grove.
Next weekend, the Cardinals will travel to Burlington, WA for a league match. They will look to capture the Skagit Valley League Match title, and continue their march to the NWAC Championships, which will be held on the weekend of May 20th.
