North Idaho College’s Student Wellness and Recreation Center kicked off the fall semester with a “Late Night at the SWRC” Aug. 24, offering tours of the facility, equipment usage and fitness classes. The goal of the evening was to increase student involvement in the still new facility and introduce students and faculty to the new programs being offered this semester.
“The point of this is to let students get a feel for our memberships and what those memberships include,” Paige Zeller, student recreation supervisor, said.
Memberships including punch card options and full memberships vary in cost depending on the number of credits a student is taking, and a new 12 p.m. class, “Express 30” that is free to students.
“It’s a free thirty-minute class offered to students who just want to try out our different classes,” Zeller said. “It’s pretty exciting because it’s free and depending on the day of the week students can try things like kick boxing, yoga, and lots of other different ones too.”
When asked about the importance of student involvement and students remaining active throughout the semester Camron Peck, facility and recreation supervisor, urged the importance of not only the physical health benefits of using the Rec. Center, but also the social importance as well.
“I stayed in the dorms last year and it was great coming here and working out meeting new people. I met a lot of great people here that I’m actually living with now,” Peck said.
Zeller encouraged student involvement as well stating that the center was not geared towards student athlete for a reason.
“We wanted a more comfortable environment for students just starting out. It can be really intimidating to go into a gym and everyone working out is a college athlete.”
