Women’s soccer beats Yakima Valley, takes first place in the East

NIC Women’s soccer beat Yakima Valley 2-0 to increase their winning streak to four games on Saturday.

Both teams played well defensively, resulting in a 0-0 score until the 81 minute when Autumn Stewart got behind two defenders to score one on one with Yakima Valley’s goalie. Zoe Lee added another score just three minutes later, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with six minutes left, which proved to be insurmountable.

The momentum shifted in NIC’s favor when defender Emmaleah Allen and Yakima Valley forward Harley Hendry collided on a clear-out. Tempers flared and Hendry received a red card for punching Allen while on the ground.

The win put NIC in first place in the East Region with three games remaining on the schedule. Following a trip to play against Columbia Basin on Wednesday NIC will return home for a showdown with second place Walla Walla Saturday, Oct. 20.

Just a dumb guy that enjoys sports. I'm pretty hard to miss with my long hair and New York Giants beanie, and you can normally spot me at most NIC home games with a befuddled look and a large camera pressed up against my face. If you happen to spot me don't be afraid to say hello. I'm usually down to talk about NIC athletics or sports in general. Wear a mask, please. I want sports back.
