On to the next: Women’s soccer survives on Ferris’ goal

NIC women’s soccer outlasted Portland Community College 1-0 in overtime in a sloppy, rainy game on Wednesday October 31.

NIC looked to be in control the entire game, out shooting Portland 16-5, but couldn’t find the back of the net in regulation.

“We we’re creating so many chances it was just a matter of time before we scored,” Head Coach Dan Hogan said.

In the sixth minute of overtime Ellory Ferris scored the walk-off goal, and was immediately mobbed by her teammates and coaches.

“It was an awesome goal,” said Hogan.

The NIC defense played as well as they have all season, and the team picked up its twelfth shutout in 20 games. Kaysha Bailey had five saves in the contest which increased her save percentage to .923, which is good for first in the NWAC among goalies with at least 10 games played.

The win propels the Cards to a quarterfinal match at Peninsula College, who won their division with a 16-2-1 record, and beat NIC 2-1 earlier in the season in their only meeting. The game is scheduled for Saturday, November 3, and is set to kick off at 5 p.m. The game can be watched on NIC Athletics’ Youtube channel.

Just a dumb guy that enjoys sports. I'm pretty hard to miss with my long hair and New York Giants beanie, and you can normally spot me at most NIC home games with a befuddled look and a large camera pressed up against my face. If you happen to spot me don't be afraid to say hello. I'm usually down to talk about NIC athletics or sports in general. Wear a mask, please. I want sports back.
