Undefeated no more! NIC Volleyball downs Spokane

Published on

NIC volleyball defeated Spokane in an exhilarating five set match Friday night.

NIC lost to Spokane 3-1 in a tournament earlier this season, but proved to be a real threat for the NWAC title with the victory on Friday.

Entering the match, Spokane had won their previous 62 games including the 2018 championship, but the Cards finally put a tally in their loss column for the first time since 2017.

Chloe Knudson led the team with 15 kills, and came up with 30 digs. Kynzey Mitzel poured in 40 digs, Hokulea Vargas put up 44 assists and Journey Tupea had 8 kills and 25 digs in the 23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 15-9 win.

“This feeling is unbelievable,” Tupea said. “We couldn’t have done without everyone coming to support us and our teamwork.”

The game may have been played in Spokane, but many NIC student-athletes showed up and had the gym rocking like it was at home.

Are we in Christianson? NIC student-athletes helped propel the volleyball team to play at their best on the road.

“The win feels pretty amazing,” assistant coach Robin Reese said. “We had our whole student-athlete body behind us and we could really feel it. We prepared really well this week, and it was a full team effort. It was awesome.”

The win extends NIC’s winning streak to five, and lands them the top spot in the East region with nine games remaining in the season.

Up next for the Cards (6-0, 17-3) is a game against Blue Mountain (1-4, 6-14) at home Wednesday October 9 at 6 p.m.
