Art you didn’t see coming: Corner Gallery displays art of NIC faculty members

Faculty members of NIC opened the latest exhibit at the college’s art gallery on Tuesday, February 9, showcasing many talents and inspiring students with everything from ceramics to comics and everything in between.

Todd Lecture Hall was entirely filled with NIC affiliates and local community members alike at the exhibit’s grand opening, where each artist got to introduce their work. NIC student Lynda Sorensen said it was fascinating to her because instead of just going into the gallery and seeing the art on the wall, you got to actually understand what their vision and inspiration were.

All of the art is currently on display in The Corner Gallery, located inside Boswell Hall, and holds a diverse mixture of art. Kris Miles, Senior Administrative Assistant for Fine Arts Division at NIC, said that people need to go in and see what the faculty is doing so that they can appreciate what they’re teaching the students.

“I loved the colors in Lisa Soranaka’s art display, they were absolutely incredible. Her clay looks just like ribbons and apparently it was inspired by lichen that actually is that color in real life.” Sorensen said, “The movement of it and the colors really just drew me in.”

“I love looking at all the different types of media that we have here,” said Miles. “All their talents are so different from each other. It’s just so great, people need to come and see for themselves.”

Adjunct Art Professor Jeremiah Schiek displayed a duo of comic book art featuring “Sherlock” and “Thistle.” He’s a professional illustrator, graphic novelist, and won the Arthor Cannon Doyle Art Award for his work depicting Sherlock Holmes. He’s had much of his work published and is currently working on his third graphic novel in his series “Hush Ronin.” (Scan the QR code to check out more of his work.)

When you first step into the gallery, you’ll see a large astronaut on the wall composed of multiple hexagon boards. Photography Professor Eric Dematos describes his work as a representation of the suit (body) that we’re given at birth, almost trapped in, and searching to find where we belong in life.

“The process of how Professor Dematos made his installation using the hexagons, it it’s so unique and creative,” said Nelson.

Aside from the mentioned items, there are many other pieces of art on display, including some that are interactive and turn on as you walk by, along with various paintings, sculptures, and pottery.

“The gallery was very inspirational,” said NIC student Ricia Lasso. “I myself, aspire to be a better artist after my visit.”
