Strings meet keys: ASNIC’s plan to add guitar to piano in SUB

ASNIC’s plans to introduce a new guitar for students’ use next to the piano in the Student Union Building (SUB) lobby.

“I thought it’d be a nice logical compliment for musicians that play guitar and not piano,” said ASNIC Senator Roger Griffin. “We wanted to provide more options for students, reach out to a bigger student population.”

“I think it’s a great idea,” said student Jadzia Mcconnell. “Lots of students here are musically inclined, and I think allowing another form of musical expression is great.”

Many students at NIC utilize the piano, and the SUB is often filled with the sounds of someone playing. It can be an enjoyment for both those listening as well those playing. Nova Peterson is one of the students who likes hearing the piano as background music while studying. She said, “A guitar would make a good addition.”

There’s not an exact date of when this will happen yet, but Griffin said they’re definitely moving forward with the project. He’s optimistic that it should take place within the next couple of months. They’ve got the supplies and just need to fill out a facilities request form.

ASNIC has chosen a Yamaha Dreadnought acoustic guitar. Griffin said they chose to add an acoustic guitar, because along with the piano, it’s one of the most popular musical instruments to play.

To keep the guitar from “walking off” they developed a tether system. They will attach a piece of leather to the guitar and a guitar stand which will be mounted on the wall by the piano.

The guitar was originally Griffin’s idea, and he says ASNIC currently does not have any plans to add other instruments in the SUB, that “the vision is not a garage band.”

Although it might not be the vision, student Ellie Sykes said “I think it’s cool that even the piano is used so much. Giving the opportunity to the community to use a guitar is really, really cool. Especially because I don’t think we actually have a band here on campus, so I think that it’s cool that there’s going to be more instruments for us to use a community. I think that it really brings people closer together.”
