Sexual assault on campus being investigated

The Coeur d’Alene Police Department and North Idaho College representatives are investigating a sexual assault accusation involving North Idaho College students on campus property.

According to the Coeur d’Alene Police Department, officers responded to the report at approximately 2 a.m. on Thursday, August 25, at NIC’s dormitory.

Coeur d’Alene Police also report that detectives were called to the scene and are working together with North Idaho College to investigate this incident. Detective Jared Reneau has detailed that this is an active investigation and additional information will be released as the investigation progresses. No arrests have been made at this time and there are no immediate concerns for campus safety, as all material parties have been identified and located.

Currently, there is no further information available regarding the alleged victim, suspect, or suspects.

Mark Browning, North Idaho College’s Vice President of Communications and Governmental Relations, released a statement Monday morning, August 29. It reads as follows:

“According to North Idaho College policy and obligations under Title IX, we investigate all allegations of sexual assault.

North Idaho College is committed to the safety and security of our students. While we can’t comment on law enforcement investigations, it’s important to note the heavy emphasis NIC places on training staff, faculty, and students in violence prevention and awareness. All employees receive Title IX training to learn how to respond and report incidents of violence. Additionally, employees and students undergo Green Dot training, which is a bystander intervention movement aimed at violence prevention.

Green Dot proactively promotes intolerance of violence by empowering individuals to take action against it. In the past two years since the program was initiated, Green Dot has been incorporated in all college-wide activities, including new student orientation to help initiate students to a culture intolerant of violence.”

Tom Greene, the Communications Coordinator for NIC, similarly articulated how FERPA restrictions prohibit the college from giving out any information regarding the accused enrollment status or academic history.

Greene said, “Our hands are kind of tied behind our backs.”
