Oh look, schools over. Didn’t see that coming, what do I do now? Get a job of corce. But where am I going to live? The dorms close in two weeks. In my car I guess, there’s no way I’m going a hundred miles south just to live in a middle of nowhere farm town all summer. Nope, gotta get a job and make enough money for rent. Too bad most of my friends already have roommates or plans for the summer. Living in my car won’t be that bad though, I’ll have a little money for food, the main issue will be finding somewhere to shower before work. I guess there’s the lake, or the public showers by the beach.
Is anyone else in this boat this year? It’s not a very fun place to be, however it’s liberating in a way. If I wanted to I could go anywhere in the country to look for summer work. If I had an urge to take a week or two and drive to New York the only thing stopping me would be the gas money. With the money I have now I could make Mexico easy, or So-Cal, maybe Seattle, or Chicago. But let’s face it, I’ll probably just end up working two jobs and living in my car somewhere around Coeur d’Alene and Spokane.
It seems like a lot of us are headed back to our respective homes for the summer either for work, ease of living, or just because we don’t have anywhere else to go. Maybe I’m just one of the few who would rather live in my car than go back to the black hole of a town where I used to live. Or maybe I’m just the only one dumb enough to not have arranged to have roommates, or a roof over my head for the summer.
The year isn’t quite over yet, we still have finals to deal with. How my current roommate has straight A’s I will never know. I suppose I could steal his brain and use it to finish my finals without failing miserably…I’ll save that as a last resort.
We’ve still got a couple weeks to put in a little last minuet extra credit work or finish up last minuet assignments. The best way to leave is with a bang right?
However my friends, regardless of our collective stress levels, the semester is ending. I think we can all see the light at the end of the tunnel, and that by itself is relieving. No more classes, no more homework deadlines, time for bonfires on the beach, camping, swimming, barefoot walking, and just being out in the sun.
For those of us who have elected to take summer classes I salute you. That takes some commitment to your degree. Just don’t let the classes and work get you down. Get out and enjoy the summer you have a right to it.
It’s kind of odd to think that this is the last column I will write for this paper until fall, but don’t fret, I’ll be back next year to take it up again. I hope you all enjoy your summers, I will enjoy mine regardless.
