The times, they are a-changin’.
This semester, NIC has a new president, Joe Dunlap, and a fresh vice president, Lita Burns. Diamond Parking will now be patrolling the parking lots, and even keeping a watchful eye over Rosenberry Drive. All across campus, students are using NIC as their vehicle of change—for some, the first transition from high school to adult life; for others, a step toward a new career or just a new skill.
In this climate of change, the Sentinel won’t be left behind. The editorial staff is almost completely new this semester, as are the rest of the staffers. Readers can anticipate changes in coverage and page design that reflect the individual tastes and styles of the new editors. In the future, the visual changes may become even more pronounced. While our commitment to serving our readers with excellent news coverage will never change, we’re getting creative, streamlining our processes and otherwise mixing it up.
It’s a new semester. We’re fired up and ready to go, and we hope the folks on the NIC campus are, too.
Like the course of true love, the road to change—to fresh starts, new ways of living and working—never did run smooth. Even here in the Sentinel newsroom, we’ve had our share of ups and downs as we’ve worked to implement changes at our newspaper. But change is often unavoidable. It’s part of the natural order of things. There’s nothing to be gained from clinging to old ways simply because of nostalgia, or because it’s easier to do things the way they’ve always been done.
Change is part of growing up. It can be difficult to accept at times—say, when one gets a ticket for parking on Rosenberry Drive—but it’s never impossible to adjust. Any change that improves a life or helps one move forward, no matter how slightly, is progress worth celebrating.
Let’s take this opportunity to celebrate the changes: a new season, a new semester, a new gift of twenty-four hours to make the best of, and the promise of another day to improve.
Let’s take a deep breath and go with the flow.
