NIC students hit the lanes Lebowski-style for food banks

Bowling for food? Yes, indeed. NIC Resort and Recreation Management students held a public bowling tournament November 10 to satisfy requirements for their class as well as help satisfy the stomachs of our community’s poor.
Andrew Charles and Rich Henning raised around 52 cans of food for local food banks. Tournament participants paid ten dollars and brought two cans of food to be donated.
The class requires students to plan and orchestrate an event for other students and the public. This gives the Coeur d’Alene community a steady supply of public entertainment.
“I don’t believe you can learn these type of things without actually doing,” said Paul Chivvis, Resort Recreation and Management class adviser.
Students created an idea board from which events were narrowed down to a handful. Each group of two to four students then took on and carried out the remaining events.
Charles and Henning coordinated with Sunset Bowling Center and the food bank, as well as placed advertisements in the NIC’s Weeks’ Worth, NIC homepage and created a Facebook invite and made personal calls, fliers, and even got an article in the Coeur d’Alene Press
Forrestt Calbaugh, a Coeur d’Alene resident and member of Sunset’s youth bowling league, said “My whole family bowls, this is my first tournament.”
Sunset Bowling Center donated old bowling pins that were turned into trophies. The tournament featured first, second and third place trophies as well as high game-high series, and a few others. Winners names where written on pins at the end.
Sunset is open seven days a week and features 99 cent bowling Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, 9 p.m. until close, as well as their Thunder Extreme Lighting Show with live DJ on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Call Sunset Bowling Center at (208)669-2695 for full schedule and events.
