New stud for Lady Cards

The Lady Cards almost missed out on recruiting this season’s power forward.

Freshman Shelby Cloninger was opting to skip Basketball this season until women’s basketball coach Chris Carlson recruited her to the team.

Cloninger said her experience at Utah State was, “comparable to hell.” With that, she is excited to be closer to home in Idaho.

Despite Cloninger’s rocky personal experience at Utah State, Carlson said he saw something special.

“[Cloninger] has that versatility, so that’s why she is a division one prospect,” Carlson said. “She has guard skills and can do a lot at that power forward spot.”

Carlson said, “I can see why she played at Utah State last season as a freshman.” He is impressed with her guard skills and is looking forward to working with her in both the wing and power forward positions.

Cloninger had one year of experience at Utah State. There, she played 18 games and made 31.2% from the field and 28.9% beyond the arc. From the line, she shot 84.6%. Last season against Air Force, she scored 21 points accompanying 3 assists, steals and blocks.

At Kamiah High School, she earned many awards including: first-team honors by the Idaho State Journal, named all-state two consecutive seasons by the Idaho Statesman and helped lead her team to a state championship in 2013. With those honors, she reached the state finals in three of her four years with the team. As a senior she averaged 14.5 points per game.

Standing at 5’11”, Cloninger is excited to play for NIC, “we have a pretty good team.” Whether or not the team does well, she is confident in her skills.

The Lady Cards went 21-10 last season. Coach Carlson said the goal is still the same, to get the most out of each player and compete nationally.
