Taking advantage of NIC’s services: Student Wellness and Recreation Center

There are several services around campus that are underutilized or generally unknown to students.  This series will cover these services and highlight the people behind the magic.

Student Wellness and Recreation Center (SWRC)

According to SWRC employees, the SWRC has so much to offer and not enough students are taking advantage of this area, especially with a free membership.  Some of the amenities provided include:

  • Full court basketball court
  • Free weights
  • Treadmills
  • Indoor track (16 laps to a mile)
  • Fitness classes (yoga, spinning, Zumba)
  • Rock climbing wall
  • Bouldering
  • Various exercising equipment
  • Rec sports (flag football, cornhole, Nintendo Switch tournaments)

If you’re a full time student – meaning you are taking 12 credits or more through NIC – you get access to the facilities and classes for free.

“I wouldn’t really think of this as a place to work out but a place to make friends as well.” said Emmanuel Smith, employee at the SWRC.  “You go inside and go play basketball, you’ll probably meet a couple people along the way, and next thing you know you’ll be friends with them, playing basketball with them regularly.”

SWRC Employees Forrest Bockas, Taylor Witzke, and Emmanuel Smith look forward to seeing you next time you hit the gym.

The rockwall is available to all students with a gym membership and costs $5 for shoes and a harness per climb.  However, there are a few nights were rentals are free.  Monday nights is the New Climber Night where all climbers get to climb for free.  Thursday nights is Women’s Climb Night where all female climbers get to climb for free.

“A big wall like that, it’s 35 feet.” said Forrest Bockas, SWRC employee.  “It’s really fun just to be on it and be around it.  If you’re a fraid of heights, there’s staff here that will talk you through the process and hopefully get you past that fear of heights.

Unless you know spots outdoors, this is probably the cheapest you’re gonna get.”

Upcoming events include spikeball on September 9 and flag football on September 12.  For more information and to sign up, visit the SWRC building.
