Audition call for “She Kills Monsters”

NIC will be holding auditions for their spring play, “She Kills Monsters” on Jan. 21 and 22 at 6 p.m. in the Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center.

NIC will be holding auditions for their spring play, “She Kills Monsters” on Jan. 21 and 22 at 6 p.m. in the Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center.

“She Kills Dragons” by Qui Nguyen is based on the game Dungeons and Dragons, a tabletop role-playing game.

Jacoby, director for “She Kills Monsters” has been teaching at NIC since fall of 1999. He said that he hopes the play will attract DnD (Dungeons and Dragons) fans as well as increase awareness of the theater department. “On one hand, it’s really funny, and on the other hand, it’s really quite moving,” said Jacoby.

“It’s got a snarky tone all the way through, very irreverent, but then there is that dramatic undercurrent,” said Joe Jacoby, NIC instructor and theater director.

The play is about a young woman who, after finding her deceased younger sister’s dungeon master outline, ends up in an adventure fighting monsters alongside her sister and her gaming group.

“It’s got a lot of juvenile humor…some of it is sexually based,” said Jacoby, “but it is at heart this really interesting story about this young woman getting to know her sister for the first time.”

Auditions are open to students, faculty, and community members. Anyone interested in helping with technical aspects are also encouraged to attend.

“We’re really supportive of each other,” said Jacoby. “I always encourage that at auditions, too, when you come be willing to make what you might think is a mistake because from my point of view you can’t really make a mistake at an audition unless you’re not listening or following directions, those kind of responsibility things.”

There are openings for seven women playing late teens to late 20s/30s, four men playing late teens to mid 20s, and others for monsters, fighting and effects.

Those who come to audition should expect some cold readings and work with movement.

“It’s really a chance for me to see what someone brings to the table and whether that fits with what the play needs,” said Jacoby.

Rehearsals will begin Jan. 27. Cast members should expect rehearsals Monday through Thursday evenings in the basement of Boswell Hall. The performances will be held April 16-18 and 23-25 in the Schuler Performing Arts Center. The play is intended for mature audiences.
