Men’s Soccer looks to gain momentum this season

Opening with a 0-4 start to the season, the North Idaho Men’s soccer team looks to bounce back as they head home this week. Ken Thompson, entering his eighth season as head coach, gave some insight on a few players and made clear his expectations for this year’s squad.

“Bottom line is we want to make the playoffs,” Thompson said. “We have a pretty athletic group this year and some guys that have probably played more competitive soccer growing up. That said we have got to score more goals and play well defensively.”

Thompson had high praise for Isaiah Damschen, who will split time in goal with returning goalkeeper Luis Hernandez. Damschen was the GSL defensive player of the year last spring with 8 shutouts in the first 10 games.

“He’s quite a talent,” Thompson said.

He also mentioned midfielders Dorian Cornichuck, Creed McKinnon and Raj Al-Ghani as players to keep an eye out for this week

“I think [watching home games] is just a fun way to be part of the college” Thompson said, “We’ve got a skilled team that should be able to play an exciting brand of soccer.”

NIC is scheduled to go up against Treasure Valley on Friday, Sept. 7 at 4:15 p.m. and vs. Blue Mountain on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 2:15 p.m.

Just a dumb guy that enjoys sports. I'm pretty hard to miss with my long hair and New York Giants beanie, and you can normally spot me at most NIC home games with a befuddled look and a large camera pressed up against my face. If you happen to spot me don't be afraid to say hello. I'm usually down to talk about NIC athletics or sports in general. Wear a mask, please. I want sports back.
