The Idaho Democratic Party encourages students to vote

A member of the Idaho Democratic Party visited North Idaho College recently to encourage students to register to vote.

Don Clymer, a field organizer for the Idaho Democratic Party, visited campus Sept. 2 asking students outside the Student Union Building if they had registered to vote. He handed out voter registration forms to students 18 years of age or older, and encouraged them to vote in the upcoming general election.

This was done as part of a statewide effort to register more younger people to vote. Older people, Clymer believed, are usually already registered to vote unlike their younger counterparts. Although the Democratic Party pushes the effort, he claimed that the movement is not meant to solicit Democratic votes.

“People in their 50s to 60s have been making the decisions for a long time, and it’s important to get their [younger people’s] voices heard.”

After helping students fill out the voter registration forms, Clymer then looked over the forms for any errors. Thereafter he took them to the Kootenai County Clerk’s office, informed the office about any errors, and left them there to handle the process.

Although the primary elections have passed, students who registered to vote will be able to cast votes for candidates in the general election on Nov. 8.

In Idaho, voter registration can be done through mail, in-person, or online.
